[postgis-users] How to change PostGIS (uninstall Old version and add newer)

trying exercise PGCON2009.

found that query result for
SELECT SUM(ST_Area(the_geom))/1000 As totalwithoverlap_km,
ST_Area(ST_Union(the_geom))/1000 As no_overlap_km
FROM land;

gives similar for both which is upsurd.

PostGIS version i have is 1.3.1 (PGSQL 8.3)

Trying ti install PostGIS 1.4

but the old PostGIS conflicts. How to safely uninstall it ??
and install PostGIS1.4 ??
