Hi Jaak,
900913 uses the "null" gridshift to convert ellipsoids (WGS84 <> Sphere)
without doing proper calculations (ie. just plain ignoring that WGS84 isn't
a sphere).

Where did your proj build come from? There was a problem with the
Debian/Ubuntu packaging a while back where the grid-shift files were marked
as being applicable to both 32 & 64 bit, when they're not. So if you weren't
on the architecture which it was built on, weird gridshift-errors would come
about.
