Thanks Paul, here's the relevant config.log part:

configure:15850: checking for PQserverVersion in -lpq
configure:15875: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 conftest.c -lpq
-L/usr/postgres/9.0-pgdg/lib/64 -lpq >&5
ld: fatal: file /usr/postgres/9.0-pgdg/lib/64/libpq.so: wrong ELF
class: ELFCLASS64
ld: fatal: file /usr/postgres/9.0-pgdg/lib/64/libpq.so: wrong ELF
class: ELFCLASS64
ld: fatal: file processing errors. No output written to conftest
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

My install of PostgreSQL is empty and I'm just using it for some
development work. Should I remove it and install the 32-bit version
instead? I mean, would that be the easiest solution here?

Thanks,
Doug
