[postgis-users] Is it possible to import shapefile from PL/PGSQL or using SQL command?

Does anyone know of any way PostGIS can import a shapefile directly by
running an SQL statement (i.e. is there any function identical to shp2pgsql
that PostGIS defines in SQL during installation?)
