Hi Even,
It’s working now, for my two test cases, --- as long as there’s a TOWGS84[0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0] field in the WKT w/ the geoid grid. I’m guessing that ties the grid to the datum/geogcs of the containing compound CRS?

Sorry for the delay, but I’ve now tested with PR3216, alone, and then with PR3127.  I’m getting the same behavior as I reported below.   Perhaps my best chance at getting this to work is to either directly make proj calls, or construct the pipeline myself and pass through gdal?

That was indeed an entirely different issue. Fix queued in https://github.com/OSGeo/PROJ/pull/3147
