[Qgis-community-team] Collaborative platform for the documentation

Hi,

yes, we tried to find a suitable tool for the documentation during the
hackfest, but haven't really succeeded yet. I think most tools you listed
below are for GUI translation using .po or .ts files - right? Sphinx was
one tool we looked at, since many projects use it at the moment (Geoserver,
postGIS, mapserver, ...). It produces nice html and PDF but we haven't
found a solution when it comes to the translation of the files.

Paolo was even thinking about writing a QGIS plugin for the translation of
the docs - maybe this could be a solution, too.

For now I focused on the updates for 1.6 to get it ready, but I agree, we
definitly need some tool(s), to make contributing to the manual and its
translation easier and more attractive. And I think this includes 2 steps:

a) Find something to use instead of latex, that is easier to learn and can
produce nice html and PDF files.
b) Find a (online) tool that is able to handle the file format of the tool
we decided to use and then provides a nice translation environment.

Not easy. I think we need to investigate more and any idea is welcome.
