SPIT was written as part of a student project and has never been  
revisited, although I made a few improvements to it. It could be  
worked on, or just turned into a front-end for shp2pgsql, although  
that tends to get messy when dealing with process calls for multiple  
platforms. My hunch is that it wouldn't take too much to solve the  
problems and make it more robust.
