After adding one item to the composer, the active tool automatically switches to 'select'. Because usually, people want to move or resize an item after adding it. Does it work if you choose the 'addMap' Tool a second time for the second map?

It built and installed well on OS X 10.5.4 and Qt 4.4.1. The
attachment shows some layout issues. After I add a map, trying to add
another map to the composer window seems to fail. Using the print
function, then sending the print output to OS X's Preview.app to view
the print output caused a crash. Here is some of the output, possibly
relevant:
