I must have at one point though 7.4 is pretty old, which seems to be
the version of the old qgis (the dates were September of 2007 which
would have been 9.0 at the time).

This worked. The third command

> sudo rm /usr/local/lib/*qgis*

had to be changed to

> sudo rm -rf /usr/local/lib/qgis/*
