Unfortunately I do use MacPorts for a few other things so it's not going anywhere especially considering I was able to work out a solution. Out of curiousity, I made a few additional attempts/test compiles last night and I think part of the mystery comes down how my $PATH is set.  In my case, the usual system stuff (/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin) is processed last so it is fair to assume there is an interaction going on there.
