[Qgis-developer] Web Client - New Features

Hi Larry,

Thanks for sharing this.

We have certainly talked about adding these base layers, but for me
personally, the drawbacks with the tiles had been worse than the
advantages they deliver to me. I think you list them well in the caveats.

However, this doesn't mean that one shouldn't go this route esp. for
pure and fast display (without caring too much about printing).

One workaround for the printing could be to use the tiled-based base map
for display on the web client and then use the raster source directly
for printing.

One could mark layers in the QGIS project as "printing only" which
wouldn't be included in the GeoExt tree and wouldn't be displayed in the
client, but when it is printed and the user selects the corresponding
tiled base layer, then QGIS can include the corresponding print layer
instead of the base layer.

Btw: do you have a link to a working prototype to see the speed
improvements?

Once your work matures, it would be interesting to have this back in the
main trunk.

Thanks a lot and greetings,
Andreas
