I think this would be very confusing for users, and should be avoided if 
possible.
The best option is always collaborating, and avoid forking a project. 
This should be done IMHO only if the original author is completely 
unresponsive (in this case, the plugin i s a good candidate for 
deprecation).

It would be good to have a general rule: 2 weeks?
