According to this discussion, most people would appreciate the switch.

I would like to have this change included as fast as possible, to give 
plugin developers as much time as possible to make the necessary 
changes before 2.0 is released.

Martin, if you are still too busy, would it be possible to push your 
branch and create a ToDo list, so others could jump in if they find 
some time?
