[Qgis-developer] Shouldn't QGis release the memory used by a plugin?

I'm doing some test with memory intensive plugins.
I've noticed that when I stop a plugin that has allocated a lot of RAM, the
memory isn't released.
The plugin launches a separated thread, then I kill it. I even unload the
plugin, but memory remains as high as when I stop it.
Shouldn't/couldn't QGis release it?
How to deal with it?
