Hi Benedict,
thanks for your offer. I can suggest you to:
* have a look to our bugtracker http://hub.qgis.org/projects/quantum-gis/issues and
choose one of the issue that needs love
* when fixed, you can issue a pull request via GitHub, that will be revised by the
core team.
Our main issue for releasing QGIS 2.0 are:
  * Symbology: fix all major issues, remove the old implementation
  * Labelling: fix all major issues, remove the old implementation
  * New web site and docs: migrate fully to an rst-based system
  * SEXTANTE integration: test suite, bugx, stabilization
  * Interface cleanup and consistency
  * Plugins migration from old to new repo, and to the new API.
