Not quite the same:
Early versions of openlayers plugin were bound to the scales the tiles 
were designed for. This was somewhat annoying, and it was changed to use 
all scales freely.

What Nathan ran into was a misbehaviour only with Google satellite 
imagery in high zoom levels, possibly due to the fact that those tiles 
are not available at the same defined highest zoom level throuout the world.
