[Qgis-developer] selective features unselection

I had not found a way to selectively remove features from
the selection set via the GUI, does any such functionality exist ?

The "unselect features" tool drastically unselect _all_ features.

Ideally I'd like to be able to perform set-oriented operations
on the selection, adding or removing elements with the same selection
power (by rectangle, polygon, freehand or programmatically).

Is this available already or planned for any future release ?
