[Qgis-developer] Interactive raster editing mode

Greetings

Does QGIS have any sort of interactive raster editing support?
Ideally this would be something  integrated in the map display panel
(not a separate task like d.rast.edit), in order to natively support
the typical pan/zoom and co-display of contextual data.

For this application assume that the raster handle provided by GDAL
supports edits, so persisting the updated values is not an issue.  The
feature set I would like to have is something like a simple 'paint'
program:
- select the layer to edit
- select the value to apply (select from legend, or eyedropper tool to
select from raster)
- select the brush shape
- use the mouse to 'paint' the changes.

If this type of feature doesn't exist, then roughly what would be
involved to implement it?
