I previously looked at DB manager plugin, but not for this. I imagined that there was some C++ stuff behind (just like for providers)

So I’m going to look deeper at the plugin…

I should have added: if you go with this option there's plenty of QGIS developers who are happy to "mentor" and give advice if you get stuck.
