Don't know what the outcome will be, but there is discussion about
leaving out Python2 from Ubuntu 16.04 desktop:

To me it looks like it will be still available in repo, but it is
something we/packagers have to be aware of.

And I hope we start hacking on 3.0 soon... :-)
