Unfortunately in this case the fix was a quick one which relied on
language features available in QGIS 3 but not QGIS 2.x, so the fix was
not easily backportable. I just stumbled on this bug while
experimenting with possible solution for a project which never went
ahead so I won't be investing any more time into this issue. It's
possible that an interested developer could adapt the fix to Qt4/non
c++11 for 2.x, but I can't volunteer the time to do this.
