possibly your are right, anyway I would suggest to be very careful
with any future change in this area. I think is right assume that a
shapefile should/can't be edited at the same time on two different gis
packages, but another thing is to kill interoperability (of the
unfortunately still the most used vector format), remember in fact
that this didn't only affected "put here the name of your favorite
proprietary GIS software" but also other open source gis packages.
