[QGIS-Developer] Adding geographic filter to browser panel ?

Hi,

It's great that it's possible to filter layers by name in the browser 
panel. Having the possibility to show only layers intersecting canvas 
extent in browser panel could be also quite useful (or maybe some other 
kind of geographic filter ?).

How complicated would it be to add this functionality to QGIS ? Is it a 
"small" task, and if so where to begin, or would it require funding ? 
Sorry if this is a naive question ! And do you think it would be useful 
to have this in QGIS ?
