[Qgis-psc] qgis web migration

Hi Otto

I'm pleased you have some crew available to tackle the web migration -
I've been wanting to do it for some time but I havent had the time or
when I have had the time the OSGEO folks I need to help me havent been
around.

It will be great if you continue to use joomla. Please let them put
the new site online as a test server before we start pointing people
to it so that the PSC can agree to the look and feel etc. After
getting it running on qgis.osgeo.org, we can get Gary to repoint the
domain name to that, and Ill shutdown the server that qgis is
currently running on.

As I mentioned on the other list, I'm a bit wary about using Joomla
1.5 already - Joomla is a great content manager but during the life of
QGIS.org being on my server we got hacked several time due to using
bleeding edge or Joomla, or not bleeding edge enough. So I think we
should be conservative about what we put on there - QGIS.org gets a
lot of traffic and we are regularly DOSSed etc. Also as I mentioned on
the commie list, I think we should prune down the web site to provide
just the very basics of what qgis is, where to download it, and where
to go on to get help and news etc. Its very tempting to add all sorts
of modules and features (as I/we have done in the past) but invariably
they get out of date and things start to look a bit ragged.

The biggest thing is going to be getting the community map moved over.
I can make a dump of the current joomla db and the qgis users db
(which I think we should move to sqlite3).

Ok I'm brain dumping...:-) and will stop now. Last thing Ill say is
that it may be better to programme the migration for when Im back in
SA as Im without internet connection at the moment and probably Ill
need to be passing sql dumps etc to the migration folks. Ill be in SA
in two weeks.

Regards

Tim
