just want to point out that some fTools algorithms already implemented in C++ by
Carson Farmer, see [0, 1]. This is direct translation of the existing
Python code
without any improvements and AFAIK, this code does not use any of the recent
API improvements.

Maybe we can at least partially reuse this code.
