Glad to see this finalized.

Could you still provide us with a 2-3 summary of what has been achieved?
Ideally this should be written for a general audience, so we can publish
it in https://wordpress.com/post/blog.qgis.org/2360

I noticed that there were multiple potential solutions listed in the QEP
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Enhancement-Proposals/issues/186 but I'm
not sure what is included in the final PR.
