 steps to reproduce:

 1) load a point layer
 2) open symbology properties (the old)
 3) select "unique value"
 4) get all values for a field
 5) select a value
 6) set the size and check the "map unit")
 7) click OK
 8) reopen the symbology properties: the map unit is not checked
