Comment (by wonder):

 IMHO this feature shouldn't be supported for C++ plugins at all. There are
 lots of binary incompatibilities among various operating systems, system
 libraries and QGIS versions. This could cause crashed during startup or
 other potential problems that aren't simply worth it.

 For python plugins this can be quite useful.
