[Qgis-user] how to add a column using the QGIS interface

Hello,

I am trying to add a new column to a table, but despite the fact I see a "new column" button when I open the attribute table I am not able to use it. It is like the developers will make that option available in a future version of QGIS.
Can anyone explain to me how to add a column, and then name it and add values to it?
