Hi cuxland

To digitize, press the toggle edit button (with the pencil). Then choose an
editing tool to digitize. To split features, choose the split tool (scissor),
left clicks into map canvas to create the spliting line, finish split line
with right mouse button. The (line or polygon) features should then be split.
After editing, press the toggle edit button again and then you are asked if
you want to save your edits or roll back.

At the moment, there is no merge tool.
The geoprocessing has the possibility to do union, but afaik only on dataset
level, not on feature level.
