OK, thanks for the tip. Currently I do  not have the time to implement
this.

The selecting of the right rasters is done via the bounds of the
rasters which are stored in a shapefile. The file-location is
based in the attribute-table.

Probably it is worth trying at MapServers code to see how they do it.
