Tim,

it's not there:
alobo at alobo-laptop:/usr/lib/qgis$ ls *.so
libcopyrightlabelplugin.so libgrassplugin.so
libpostgresprovider.so
libdelimitedtextplugin.so libgrassprovider.so
libscalebarplugin.so
libdelimitedtextprovider.so libgridmakerplugin.so libspitplugin.so
libdxf2shpconverterplugin.so libinterpolationplugin.so libwfsplugin.so
libevis.so libmemoryprovider.so libwfsprovider.so
libgeorefplugin.so libnortharrowplugin.so libwmsprovider.so
libgpsimporterplugin.so libogrconverterplugin.so
libgpxprovider.so libogrprovider.so

I'm using the preview2 for ubuntu 8.04 installed from the
http://ppa.launchpad.net/jef-norbit/ubuntu
repository

BTW, are not the directions for ubuntu in
http://download.qgis.org/downloads.rhtml
wrong?
It says:
Add these lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/jef-norbit/ubuntu hardy main deb-src
http://ppa.launchpad.net/jef-norbit/ubuntu hardy main Then do sudo
apt-get update sudo apt-get install qgis

should not be:

Add these lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/jef-norbit/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/jef-norbit/ubuntu hardy main

Then uninstall (select complete remove in Synaptic) your previous qgis
version and install with synaptic or do:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install qgis
