[Qgis-user] print legend in the image

Hi Alexandre

If it is a shapefile, you need to create a thematic map based on some
attribute in the attribute table if you want to see multiple colours.

This is explained I think in the manual (its for an older version but
should still apply for your use case):

The short version is to higlight the layer in the legend and then use
the 

Layer -> Properties

menu option to bring up the layer properties (you can also double click
the legend entry to bring up the properties).

Now click the Symbology tab and start to play around with the options
you find there. You will probably want to use 'Unique', 'Graduated' or
'Continuous' options to get a nice range of colours in your map.
