I'll have a look at the project files. Thanks for the hint.

Furthermore,
wasn't there (back in earlier QGIS versions) a "duplicate layer" option
in the "right-click" menu on (at least) vector layer? Why should I not
to (re)load a shapefile for instance if I want to compare various
symbology settings?
