on my ubuntu 8.10 box :

 * libgdal, gdal-bin version is 1.5.4-2~intrepid3
 * qgis version is 1.0.1-1~intrepid1

They come from 

  deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/qgis/ubuntu intrepid main

and the crash occurs.
