Civil Designer is a complex design package and menu / tool bar clutter
is addressed by the use of eight modes. Vector editing tools are
grouped into the CAD mode, raster tools into the DTM mode, network
analysis tools into the water mode, etc. Clicking on the mode buttons
morphs the menus and tool bars to display tools that are relevant for
the particular mode. Some items (zooming, panning, etc) are persistent
across all modes. One draw back is that some tools don't fall neatly
into the mode silos and this can be frustrating for a new user. "I
remember a tool for doing X, but now where exactly was that tool
located?"
