[Qgis-user] Scale and UTM

I need to set the scale from degrees to kilometers.  I tried looking  
in the preferences, but didn't see anything obvious.  I though I might  
need to set the project to use UTMs.  My project area is in Ireland  
and, at least in GRASS, I have been using UTM zone 29U.  There is no  
29U in the UTM area of Select Global Defaults.  The coordinates for  
the various sites seem all right.  I just need to get the scale right.

Can anyone help?
