Hello,
the matter shifted someway on development. About speed, there is
obviously a "big opportunity" to make QGis faster; it's not only a
matter of rough performance but a matter of project strategies. If you
want a faster startup usig lots of raster files, just use a virtual
raster to see it parsed all together. If you ask GDAL to parse every
single raster file you will have to wait, just tell GDAL what to do
with an xml (or .vrt file).
