yes you can,
just create a postgis polygon layer and add a trigger to the column
where you want to store the area value. You can do it without leaving
qgis with the postgis manager plugin.

you don't need this tool to calculate areas, you can do it with the
field calculator or with the "export/add geometry columns" of the vector
menu.
