Yes. Definitely not the best solution ever :-)

As far as I understand this is only because of the bug in the qgis
plugin. I'm not sitting on my mac now but I guess qgis finds the JRE in
/usr/bin/java. Without the bug, model support is still not enabled
because of the missing ili2c.jar.
