Thanks, Franks, for the navigational tip; it seems i looked everywhere but there for the control. 

And Matt: thanks for all your help with negotiating the diffs between these different CRS; can't as of yet say i know a Google Mercator from a WGS84, but i do feel now like i know just enough to blunder through to what i want to do.
