[Qgis-user] how to find legends for wms maps

This is a general question about wms but I am using qgis.  Have got the map data via a url for the wms (via getCapabilities) but how to then also get the legend saying what each of the categories(colours on the map) mean.  In some instances there are .qml files that the wms service has provided which then produce nice legends but in most cases these are not available.
