You should check the CRS of your file, right-click on the layer >
Properties > General
Check the CRS there. If your vector file does not have a projection,
QGIS sets it to EPSG:4326 as default.

the x and y coordinates in your status bar should give help you to
assign the right projection, in case your file comes without prj file.

Once you determine the right projection, you can save it as a new file
right-click > Save as...
and change the CRS to EPSG:4326.

Open the new file and run the extract coordinate on the newly generated
file.
Hope that helps.

Cheers
Saber

How do I know if they're in lat/long projection? In the bottom-right of
the window it says EPSG:4326. When I used the "Export/add geometry
columns" tool, the numbers that were created are way too high to be
lat/long coordinates. Any thoughts?

Thanks!
