[Qgis-user] Fwd: Map Legend not showing & can't find

I'm a newbie and running through James Greys Getting Started post ..... 
from 2008.
I load the sample Alaska shapefile OK but I don't get the Map Legend on 
the left side of the screen. My whole screen is taken up by the map. How 
do I get the Map Legend to show on the left?
