[Qgis-user] QGIS with geotiff tiles

I have a set of geotiffs, comprising several Gb of tiles covering an area.

Is there any way QGIS can be configured to use a shapefile as a pointer to these, much as mapserver can do? 

I don't want to have each tile as a separate layer in QGIS, and short of setting up a WMS service, I don't know how best to do this.
