[Qgis-user] Question on Select by expression

update......

I'm not sure what you call the thing that looks like a separator (small 
widget with |||) but I was apparently able to "hide" the expressions 
through some sort of newly acquired skill. it is now Unhiden - and now 
back to selecting features through expressions. Life is good.
