Hi
If you have points/locations you can create bufferzones http://docs.qgis.org/2.2/en/docs/gentle_gis_introduction/vector_spatial_analysis_buffers.html
If you want to calculate use the fiels calculator. In this example change the function from Length to Area http://docs.qgis.org/2.2/en/docs/user_manual/working_with_vector/field_calculator.html

Hi,
There are a number of plugin that can make circles. ArcheoCad, is one of them. If is does not work the way you want, look for an other under CAD like plugins. You can also create a 50k buffer around points.

Once you have the circle, save the layer and right click on the circle, and you will get the area. If you want, you can create a field called 'area' in the layer with circles and you can generate the area using the Qgis field calculator using and expression.
