Unfortunately in newer versions of Excel (maybe Version > Office 2010?) you can't open DBF-Files anymore... Use CSV or do not use Excel.

Dear Matthias,
in the popup manu of the layer (right click on the layer name in Layers
list) select Save as, select Coma separated value (CSV) or DBF file for the format. Both CSV and DBF can be opened by Excel (or Libre Office Calc).
