[Qgis-user] merged files generating "bad handles"

Hi people
When merging files I often get a working file that I am able to save, 
see and work with but when I reopen Qgis it reports that the files have 
bad handles and as I cannot locate where the file was saved to (despite 
various searches) I lose the work. Any suggestions on what I might be 
failing to do.
