[Qgis-user] FW: Custom CRS problem

I can't seem to be able to add a custom CRS that shows correctly, using
version 2.12.1-Lyon on Windows.
Initially I tried a local grid, which didn't work. So I copied and pasted
several parameters exactly and tried those and still they didn't work. For
example, I used OSGB 1936 / British National Grid:
(+proj=tmerc +lat_0=49 +lon_0=-2 +k=0.9996012717 +x_0=400000 +y_0=-100000
+ellps=airy +towgs84=446.448,-125.157,542.06,0.15,0.247,0.842,-20.489
+units=m +no_defs).
When this is applied, the grid is aligned exactly vertically and
horizontally, which clearly shouldn't be (using a project CRS of EPSG:3857
these grids should be dipping slightly to the east in the area I am
mapping). Also the grid references are showing completely incorrect numbers.
If I copied and pasted a known set of parameters I can't understand why this
custom grid isn't showing exactly the same as the one I copied..
UPDATE: I've tried it both on Windows and Linux Mint 17.3 and still no luck
Any help would be appreciated as I really can't work this out! Thanks.
